After she and her canine companion, Leel, spend time alone, Arcene is picked up in a hot air balloon by her old friend, Fasolt. Caught in a storm, Arcene and Leel fall out of the balloon and end up on a strange island, with even stranger inhabitants, where she is drugged, judged, and then sentenced to The Hunt.
Arcene, however, has never been one to play by the rules of others. Angry at treatment she feels unfair, she uses all her abilities to turn the hunters into the hunted, and finds herself in a situation that has no clear outcome in sight. Will she prevail and save the islanders from themselves, or will she be consigned to never see her home or son again? Arcene The Island by Al K. Line is the continuing adventure of Arcene, a 22-year-old woman forever trapped in a 15-year-old body.
The author skillfully switches back and forth between Arcene’s point of view and that of the enigmatic inhabitants of the island in an adventure that will keep you turning pages until the stunning climax. A fantastic pastische of science fiction, dystopian thrills, and edge-of-the-seat adventure, that will get you hooked on a different kind of heroine.

The Island is the second book in the Arcene series. These books take place after the Commorancy series and you do not have to have read the Commorancy series to know what is going on.
In The Island, Arcene has just left the Blue Castle (also the first book) with her trusty companion and best friend Leel, a Great Dane type dog. Arcene is 22, but using her "Awoken" powers she was able to stop her body's aging and appears to be a 15 year old. Once clear of the castle, Arcene sends a message back to the Commorancy to see if she can get a ride back home. The ride appears in the form of her friend, Fasolt, piloting a hot air balloon. Floating back home in the balloon, they wind up in the path of a storm and Arcene and Leel end up back on the ground. Arcene tends to just roll with the punches so she looks at this unexpected interruption as a chance for a new adventure. Having spotted what looks to be an interesting island she and Leel head for it. Things go awry and Arcene and Leel end up at a different island. The people on this island have been isolated from the rest of the country for a long time. Before long Arcene breaks a rule (or did she?) and is judged, found guilty, and sentenced to be hunted. The Hunt is televised to the people of the island, but they don't realize that they have made a mistake. Arcene is no one's victim (anymore) and uses her Awoken abilities to remind them that hunting isn't very fun when you are the prey. I fully enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one in the series.

Arcene The Island, the second book in the series by Al. K. Line, follows Arcene from the Commorancy series as she leaves the relative safety of her home behind for a vacation of sorts and time away from her friends and her child.
The Island picks up immediately after “The Blue Castle” ends with Arcene looking to get home and leave the horrors of the Castle and its strange inhabitants behind. After getting caught in a horrible storm along the way Arcene and Leel are dumped unceremoniously in a forest while her transport continues on without them. Finally managing to make their way to the coast and commandeer a boat in an effort to visit a nearby island before making their way home, they are swept out to sea only to arrive at a second Island days later.
If Arcene thought the inhabitants of the Blue Castle were weird, she hasn’t seen anything yet. After being “Judged” for what is seemingly a minor infraction, Arcene and Leel find themselves transported back to the mainland as the “Prey” in a bizarre televised hunt for the pleasure of the Island’s population. Can Arcene and Leel survive?
Overall I really enjoyed this second offering in the Arcene series and having not yet read the parent series, it wasn’t hard to follow along or pick up on the subtleties of this “world”. There is enough back story provided to keep the action moving without getting bogged down in details. Quite a few new characters are introduced who possess “Awoken” abilities which really helped also to understand the concept and what the Awoken can and cannot do. I noticed what appeared to be a sort of friendship developing between Arcene and Talia and I would love to see what kind of trouble these two could get up to if left to their own devices.
Yet another great story that left me curious to see where we go from here.
