Alba has graduated from high school. Now it's her last summer with her friends, who are all moving away. But Alba doesn't want to go. She wants everything to stay the same. And then, the weirdos start showing up in her town claiming that the world is about to end and only this town will survive.

I'm definitely not the right audience for this book. But, I'm sure high school students everywhere will be happy to have a protagonist who is thoroughly confused, and possibly terrified, about what's next after high school. There are lots of things that I liked about Cinnamon Girl, but all that "What am I doing with my life?" got really old for me.

Things I Liked -
* It's really really Australian. They have Christmas in the summer! And there was lots of great Aussie slang. It totally captured regular life in small-town Australia.... not that I've ever been there, but it just felt accurate.
* Alba is a Real Girl. She isn't some skinny-mini, fashionista. Alba has her own interests and personal style. She's a real girl. Yay for real girls!
* Alba is a nerd. She's into comics and drawing and baking. Alba is smart, and her dialogue is witty and full of comic book references.
* The last 50 pages were intense. They kind of snuck up on me. I was surprised at how invested I had become in these characters.

Things I Disliked -
* It's normal Realistic Fiction. From the cover and title, I was expecting more elements of fantasy or sci-fi. But, no.
* The build-up was slow and tedious. All that character development and internal conflict just about killed me. Can we get some plot in the first half please?!
* So much angst! I'm definitely not the target audience...

The Incredible Adventures of Cinnamon Girl is a humorous YA contemporary about the end of the world. A psychic rolls into this town in Australia, claims the end of times is near, and all of Eden Valley goes wild.

This was seriously adorable and a bit something out of a feverish dream. I can’t stop smiling over how much fun this book is.

The narrative style is great - our protagonist, Alba, talks directly to the reader and is very relaxed about everything. I sucked this book up in nearly one sitting because it was so breezy and engaging. There’s fabulous illustrations of Alba’s in

Our protagonist, Alba, is content with her life as it is, and she doesn’t know what she wants from the future. Her friends are looking at their future and how to get out of Eden Valley, but Alba wants to keep reading & drawing comics and working in her family’s bakery. But staying behind might mean losing her best friend, Grady.

All of the friendships in this book are fantastic (maybe problematic in Daniel’s case), but the tight bond between Grady and Alba is phenomenal. They’ve been best friends since they were babies, and Alba’s heart is starting to hurt because Grady is acting differently. Even if the rapture doesn’t come, Alba has to accept people are moving on without her.

The book is so funny, like I died laughing over this throwaway joke about the psychic’s mustache getting its own Twitter account. But it’s also emotional and sweet. A knot formed in my chest when Alba tells Grady she’s always known he couldn’t stay still. And oh, how I could viscerally feel Alba’s pain as she starts to think her creation of Cinnamon Girl will never be anything more than sketches.

Alba’s a thicker protagonist who is super okay with her size, and there’s a bit of a diet book fiasco late in the book I thought was handled respectfully. Not overly sure if I would say this book is fat-positive since I couldn’t gauge if Alba is supposed to be fat or just not-skinny, but Alba is 100% comfortable with her physical appearance, which is nice to read. She’s not ashamed to admit she eats lots of treats from her bakery. )

Fans of comics will love spotting all the different references sewed in the book. This nerdy kind of fun is utterly delightful. There’s some television and movie references too (even a Muppets Babies one, what!!! D), but comics are Alba’s number one love and dominate the field.

…well, maybe comics are Alba’s number two love. )

I started out think this book was charming and fairly enjoyable but nothing really special. No, it's not all that original in the overall plot, but it has so much character and heart that I couldn't help but love it. Solid 4.5 stars here, for me.

The characters are distinctive and just plain fun to be around, there's a kindness and warmth to these characters and their relationships that I really appreciated. Alba, Grady, and most of the supporting cast (though especially Alba) feel real, and they're so easily likable that you're along for the ride from the first chapter. This is a very light read, but it has some surprising emotional heft at times, due in large part to the authenticity of the characters and their world. Plus, it has a nicely-realized theme of uncertainty about the future that is MUCH more relatable than, "so many boys are in love with me and also I'm the chosen one." I really liked this one!
