1798, Portsmouth, home of the Royal Navy. Giles Courtenay is about to take command of a new, powerful frigate. After narrowly escaping an attempt on his life, he takes command and proceeds to blockade duty off France before being ordered to effect the rescue of an important official and his daughter (whom he met in his last adventure APHRODITE'S QUEST) from the Spanish. He makes an audacious plan and rescues them. On delivering them to Gibraltar, he is ordered to join Nelson's Fleet trying to seek out French intentions in the Mediterranean. He gathers vital intelligence and is on the edge of the Battle of the Nile, taking part afterwards in the capture of some French ships fleeing the battle.

If it sailing ships I enjoy it, add swashbuckling sea action, I am all in. I have truly enjoyed the series.
These are getting better and better and, though The Captain is impervious to danger, the battle scenes are good. I do have doubts that every pistol shot would be a header - unless from five feet or less - and every duel would be one on one with dozens fighting around them, but still very enjoyable to read. Good series.
Yes...The outcomes are somewhat predictable, but the joy is getting to them. The Hero wins in spite of seemingly impossible odds. Tales of struggle, friendship and loyalty. Love your stories, Mr Withecombe!
Pretty good storyline. 2 thingsreally bother me so far as a I have read. 1st, a bowline I is a knot, not a command, 2nd a British ship captain would Not yield command to a more junior officer ad sail off with a prize HE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH CAPTURING, and no share in prize money. His suitailoty fof command would become disastrously compromised if he let a junior carry out a cutting out mission without his support and supervision. WOULD NOT HAPPEN!
The whole Courtney series is a real well written series, As fan of HMS naval history, I thought it was very true era of Wooden sailing ships and men of iron. The series is an equal to Alexander Kent. Dewey Lambdin, etal.
Good read!! Fast moving!!
I have purchased all books in this series to date.To follow this series you need to start from the first. If you enjoy age of fighting sail books, you will enjoy these.
