Short Sips Coffee House Flash Fiction Collection 2 Jessica A Weiss David C Hayes 9781617061875 Books Reviews
In the horror world, there are two camps out there. There are the gore/ splatter/ violence fans and the dark, Gothic fans. Short Sips Coffee House Flash Fiction Collection 2 is definitely for the literary horror community. 99 flash fiction pieces run the gamut! Werewolves, vampires, monsters under the bed and in your head creep from the shadows to haunt your nightmares.
This is a flash fiction collection and reads quickly. It was nice to just pick it up here and there for a quick scare! The stories really vary in style, theme, and monsters, so there really is something for everyone. There is very little gore here. Many of the stories are psychological fear in the tradition of Poe and many of the old masters. Here are a few of the truly outstanding stories in this huge collection Iain Pattison "Dead Men's Shoes," B.E. Scully "Might as Well Live," Chris Bartholomew "The Favorite Picture," C.S. Nelson "The Passing of Camel," and Matt Kurtz "The Thing in the Woods."
I was very disappointed to see the large number of grammar errors throughout the collection. It was a disservice to the great writers here and the editor needs called on it. As with any anthology, not every story will please every reader. There's a mix of fantasy, sci-fi, and traditional horror in this one, so if your tastes don't run in a particular direction, you won't enjoy specific selections.
With the sheer number of stories here, you will find more than enough to satisfy the darker urges! This is an intense,. Gothic-style collection of great flash fiction. Grab this one!
Positives A huge collection of dark fiction that focuses on the macabre, creepy, and mysterious rather than gore and violence. With 99 stories in all, there is something for everyone. Zombies, werewolves, vampires, and things I can't even begin to explain! With so many stories, it was tough, but here are a few really superb standouts
Steve Hagood "Into the Crosshairs"
Iain Pattison "Dead Men's Shoes"
B.E. Scully "Might as Well Live"
Chris Bartholomew "The Favorite Picture"
Heidi Mannan "High Hopes Deli"
C.S. Nelson "The Passing of Camel"
Joe Jablonski "An End To Misery"
Matt Kurtz "The Thing in the Woods"
Lawrence Falcetano "The Men of Salem County"
Rohini Pathmanathan "Jasmine and Joss-Sticks"
Negatives EDITING!!! Come on! There were basic grammar mistakes throughout! In a collection this large, there will always be stories that don't work for one reason or another. The sci-fi horror and fairy tale horror stories aren't my cup of tea. There was the smattering of cliché and silly as well.
Summary A great read overall! Enough to please a wide variety of tastes! Dark, haunting, and highly recommended!
