If you cry all through this novel I wouldn't blame you a bit. It's one of those. It grabs your heart and doesn't let go, ever.
My favorite part is the journal Florrie Daniels keeps on their road trip:
"Tomorrow might be my last morning with her and here she was wasting time with itches and the coffee tin when all I wanted to do was to grab her hand and stay right here in Wherever, Arizona, until forever."
I also like the screenplay, "When She Was King," that Florrie writes after the road trip. It also touched me the way Ethel kept track of all their expenses on the road, with authentic prices of the 1920's.
Florrie has more than one secret, and we discover Carl, Ethel's husband, has one as well. Their secrets cause them a great deal of pain and regret which they try to overcome with love.
This novel needs to be a film. It has echoes of Thelma and Louise and The Misfits. It's a beautiful story done brilliantly. You won't forget it quickly.

A gentle expose of why we need more compassion for all, why we need minimum safety standards. The characters are beautifully wrought in a place and time brought back to life. I loved this book!
I expected to learn more about the "radium girls" than I did. Instead, the main focus is on the car journey. It's hard for us to know what travel entailed before interstates and hotels. There are themes of homosexuality that I wasn't anticipating when I read this.
I loved this book. It’s like two great stories in one. One had a rather sad ending & the other was so satisfying! I almost wished it didn’t end it’s always a bit sad for me when a good book comes to an end. If you are wondering whether or not to read this I suggest you do!
Woman Enters Left takes readers along for the ride in this original, cleverly written, poignant story of two very different road trips, each of them a journey of discovery. In 1926, Ethel and Florrie head west from Newark to Nevada; two old friends who rediscover their deep friendship while revealing secrets both startling and terrifying. In 1952, movie star Louise Wilde sets off for the East Coast, after she receives an inheritance which includes pictures of her mother, who died when she was six. Looking for answers about her mother, and coming to terms with a career and marriage that are both floundering, Louise embarks on her own road trip. The stories of the three women and Louise’s Dad, Carl, are told with humor and heart. Jessica Brockmole makes use of journals, grocery lists, and letters to enhance the telling of this story. Who knew that a grocery list could be so compelling, but those lists enhanced the story and revealed so much about the characters. The three women truly come to life on the pages of this book; their talents, their foibles, their desires, their dreams, their hearts.
I've read Jessica Brockmole's other two novels, both of which I enjoyed very much, but I believe Woman Enters Left is my favorite. Its dual stories are set in two of my favorite time periods - the 1920s and 1950s - and are full of fun historical detail. But as usual, where Jessica Brockmole shines most of all is in her characters. I just ADORE them all, root for them all, feel sad for the them all and glad for them all in turns. I cried more than once in the last quarter of the novel and will definitely hold this one in my heart for a long time.
As the story of successful actress Louise and her troubled marriage unfolds in 1952, the story of her parents' troubled marriage in 1926 is revealed through journal entries. The impacts of radium on WW I factory workers and Communist blackballing in 50s Hollywood are skillfully woven in, as well as adventures of low-budget cross-country travel in a flivver. I thoroughly enjoyed the journeys of the three primary female characters, and felt I learned some interesting things about early 20th century America. Although the ending tied up a bit too neatly for my taste, I appreciate the rich details and subtle ways various personal relationships are revealed. I would definitely recommend it, and I plan to read more of Brockmole's writing.
This book would have been so much better if the author had narrowed the focus of her story. I felt that she used a " kitchen sink" approach by trying to include too many plot/character elements, which ended up diluting the story. Radium poisoning, PTSD for veterans, same-sex attraction, blacklisting in 1950's Hollywood - yes, all of these were included, and none of the issues were explored with any depth. And if you are expecting a romantic story, well, this doesn't do romance very well, either. It's as tedious as Louise's journey across the country.
