Eleven by Patricia Reilly Giff is a great mystery. The title symbolizes the age of Sam MacKenzie, the address of the children's home in New York where he lived after his mother died and the chimney stacks on the children's home formed an eleven. The mood of the story is happy and sad. Sam was happy once he found out his past and sad when his friend Caroline had to move away. Sam MacKenzie is the main character and the supporting characters are his friend Caroline, his grandfather Mack and their neighbors Onji and Anima. Sam struggles to read so he gets Caroline to help him with the mystery of why he was in a newspaper clipping reporting him missing when he was younger and his name was Sam Bell. He finally talks to Mack and he explained everything. Mack is Sam's grandfather and Sam's mother, Julia Bell, is Mack's daughter who died. The story was very good. I have a difficult time reading too but this book kept my attention the entire time. I would recommend this book to anyone in 3rd, 4th or 5th grade.

Summer reading book for school. My daughter liked it.
good book and arrived when stated
My 6th grade special ed English students loved this book!
Cute book. Nicely timeless, and with a nice gentle story. Just enough tension to draw you along, while never losing sight of the happy ending.

Would recommend for budding artists, kids with challenges to overcome, and really just anyone who loves a quick read with a satisfactory happy ending. )
"Eleven" draws you right into the mystery of the main character's past in the first few paragraphs. It builds incrementally with each chapter, clue by clue, until finally, the puzzle of the past is revealed at the end of the book. Great characters and a fun read!
Patricia Reilly Giff is one of my favorite Young Adult and children's authors. She isn't afraid to discuss the troubling issues youth encounter in our society, but she doesn't overdue the negative side of life, either. Her characters are believeable and you can look forward to a positive outcome. I enjoyed this book about a boy who has trouble reading, and finds a newspaper clipping with his photo at 3 years old. The caption reads..."Missing." The natural questions come "Was I kidnapped?" "Is my grandfather not my grandfather." A new friend helps him find out the truth about himself. A great book about friendship and loyalty.
This is an ok book. I found it when looking for 4th grade mystery. This book is more for Middle School. I didn't think they were EVER going to get to the solution to the mystery of Sam's photo in the newspaper clipping.
